  • Alaska Highlights

Go Astro Travel, LLC is offering our fifth Joe Sixpack beer themed trip.  This time we sail round trip from Seattle.  Along the way, we’ll see glaciers, Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway Alaska.  A cruise to Alaska is all about the destinations – alive with wildlife and natural beauty.

And we’ve picked this itinerary to make sure you have plenty of time to explore the ship itself since there’s a couple of days at sea.  The Norwegian Bliss truly is a destination unto itself.  It even features an onsite brewpub with over 20 beers on tap and scores of others in bottles. And the beverage package is included in the price!

    • – Each day you will have the opportunity to meet with Don Russell in the brewpub to sample and discuss beers
    • – At certain  ports, Don will lead the group to a bar or brew pub to explore local offerings
    • – Norwegian Bliss is a brand new ship custom made for Alaska
    • – Nightly and Daily entertainment featuring Broadway quality plays,  a Go Kart racing track and Laser tag
    • – Over 30 food and beverage venues on the ship.  Great quality and variety.
    • – All meals are included – from all you can eat buffets to fine table service
    • – Beverage and Specialty dining package included in the price.

    NCL Bliss itinerary

The cruise starts and ends in Seattle, a city with a big craft beer presence.  We stop in Ketchikan and Juneau before cruising the Glacier Bay.  Next we visit Skagway and finally an evening stop in beautiful Victoria British Columbia.

Here’s a nice list of the breweries in each of our stops.

Plan on flying round trip to Seattle.  The airport is about 14 miles or 30 minutes from the pier.

    Detailed Itinerary:

    DAY 1 – Seattle
Embark your cruise in Seattle. Get to know this fabulous ship and explore.  The ship departs at 3:30 pm.

    DAY 2 – At Sea

One of the best things about the Bliss is that it’s filled with so much to do.  You’ll want to check out the Race Track, play Laser Tag, plunge in the Aqua Park,  try out the casino, or stay in shape at the fitness center.

If you prefer something more soothing, you can relax at the spa, hang out on the pool deck in a whirlpool, curl up with a good book almost anywhere or just marvel at the scenery from your room or the Observation Lounge.  And that spa is nothing but spectacular featuring steam rooms, salt room and snow room, a thermal suite (dry sauna) and of course plenty of treatment rooms.  Our advice is to schedule your spa treatments on the very first day so you don’t miss out (it’s very popular on days at sea).

    DAY 3 – Juneau, Alaska

We arrive in Juneau mid afternoon but don’t leave till 11 pm.  So there’s plenty of time for activities.  Here’s a few ideas:

    • Whale and/or Orca watching
    • Visit Mendenhall Glacier (nature hikes, treking on ice or dogsled)
    • Visit a historic gold mine
    • Sea kayak adventure
    • Sled Dog discovery
    • Sea plane exporation
    • Helicopter rides to Mendenhall Glacier
    • White water rafting
    • Bike and Brew tour
    • Fly fishing
    • Wildlife adventure

    DAY 4 – Skagway

We have most of the day to enjoy Skagway.  Here you can enjoy

    • A ride on the railway – Klondike gold rush
    • Catamaran ride into a fjord
    • Sled Dog experiences
    • Wildlife refuge exploration
    • Gold panning
    • Scenic tours
    • Crab feasts and Salmon bakes
    • Wilderness safaris
    • ATV and 4 x4 adventures
    • Hiking
    • Kayaking or canoeing
    • Horseback riding adventure
    • Rock Climbing and rappelling
    • Glass blowing

    DAY 5- Glacier Bay
All day sightseeing by ship. For many, this will be the highlight of the cruise.

    Glaciers in Alaska

    DAY 6 – Ketchikan

We arrive nice and early so you’ll have lots of time to explore this fantastic port.  This is one of the rainiest places in the US which results in lush green and plentiful wildlife everywhere you look.   Here’s some of the great things you can do:

    • Explore Misty Fjords: by boat, canoe, Jeep or (our favorite) by seaplane
    • Check out a lumberjack show
    • Check out the rainforest canopy and ocean from zipline vantage point
    • Go fishing in world class waters – in the Salmon capital of the world.  Not bad crabbing too.
    • Explore the rainforest (inflatable and hiking)
    • Enjoy Crab feasts
    • Go on a wildlife cruise or safari
    • Explore totem poles and paddle a canoe in a pristine mountain lake
    • Nature sanctuary guided hike
    • Zodiac expeditions
    • Explore the fun town of Ketchikan
    • Alaska Bear watch by plane or drive
    • Kayak

    DAY 7 – Victoria BC
We arrive in Victoria  in the evening but don’t leave till midnight. Some things to do:

    • Butchart Gardens is world famous
    • Victoria city tours and highlights
    • Ocean wildlife and orca exploration
    • Victoria by Bike
    • Hang out  in town and enjoy the harbor walk and numerous bars and restaurants

    DAY 8 – Seattle
    Back to reality.

  • Here’s some idea of what the Norwegian Bliss offers.  The photos were from our Inaugural trip in May 2018.  We felt this would be perfect venue for our Alask Bliss and Beer cruise.

    The Go Kart Racetrack.

The Go Karts are on the very top deck.  They charge extra for this, but as long you know ahead of time, it’s well worth budgeting.  You wear a liner to put under the helmet to keep things sanitary.  Getting in the Go Kart requires a little manipulation if you’re larger but once in, its comfortable.  Your right foot controls the accelerator, your left foot the brake (I never used this until the very end).  The Norwegian attendant can control all the cars;  if there’s a crash (bump from behind for example), the attendant slows down or stops the cars remotely. Then the attendant comes out on the track to assist if necessary.

Even with small crowds, there’s a bit of a process to get to the race track.  10 people race at any given time while 10 more are waiting in the cars and putting on their helmets (as shown below).  10 more are getting fitted with the liners and listening to operating instructions.  And 10 others are queued up behind them. Finally 10 others are back listening to the safety instructions.  It all runs smoothly and quickly.

    The Food

We really enjoyed the food aboard the Norwegian Bliss.  There’s plenty of food venues to choose from (see the tab called “what’s included” for a full list).  But we were even impressed by the buffet.  Here’s some shots of their seafood buffet.    And yes, lots of crab for the grabbing.  And this is only small sampling of what was offered.  Plenty of salads, meats and deserts too.

Unusual for a cruise ship – there’s a BBQ place.  And it was excellent!
